The Dutch digital economy continued to grow in the first quarter of 2026, although the Dutch Digital Economy Index (DEIN) declined slightly from 117 to 116 points. Digitalisation remains the main driver of growth, supported by strong investments in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). At the same time, the economic value of the digital sector is increasing, while employment is declining due to higher productivity and automation.
Digital infrastructure also continues to expand but is increasingly constrained by challenges such as grid congestion and rising energy demand. In addition, digital resilience and digital sovereignty have become key priorities as cyber threats increase and society becomes more dependent on digital systems.
