The UPS that’s as unique as your needs

The UPS that’s as unique as your needs

The new Socomec MODULYS XM is a medium power modular UPS based on 50 kW power modules; the installed power can be increased up to 600 kW, plus an extra 50 kW redundancy, all within the same footprint. As flexible as it is reliable, the MODULYS XM can be configured to order – and adapted to the unique demands of its operating environment, with flexible personalisation options available on-site, even after installation.

Whether being implemented within an existing setup or a brand-new installation, the XM’s exceptional configurability means that it can be tailored precisely to specific needs – making it ideal for a wide range of applications. While some options may need to be chosen during the initial configuration, genuine flexibility remains throughout – and most options can be added at the installation site effortlessly, without the need for any further adjustments.
“You can’t imagine how many times I have heard customers tell me that they have very specific needs and that the UPS will need to be adapted” explains Product Manager, Leo Saro. “That’s why we’ve developed a set of more than 25 standardised, pre-engineered and pre-tested parts in order to personalise the UPS architecture.

“We can connect the UPS and provide access to digital services, ensuring that it’s fully adapted to its operating environment. What’s more, we know that it’s so often the case that particular needs are discovered only after the UPS has been installed within the real working environment, which is why almost all of these options have been designed to be integrated on site – even at the very last minute.

“It’s no longer necessary to commit to rigid personalisation in advance, in the factory, and it eliminates tricky decision making before being armed with the reality of the installation, because the MODULYS XM allows for flexible personalisation, on site, according to real needs.”

The UPS with the stamina to match your Data Centre

This smart and modular system has been designed with longevity in mind. With a proven design life of more than 20 years, it’s built to last – able to outlive the facilities that it powers. Saro explains; “Speaking with the Data Centre Facilities Managers, some of the most common feedback is that they always dread the moment when a UPS is at the end of its life and needs replacing. It’s not only the financial impact of a new UPS but also the potential risks associated with a replacement.

“Another point is that Data Centre infrastructure circularity must be considered at the early stages of design. One of the keys to success is the ability to keep products in circulation for a much longer period of time, which is why we have increased the lifetime of the MODULYS XM by 50% compared to market standards.” Passing demanding stress tests and accelerated lifetime tests under the supervision of qualified third parties, the design lifetime of MODULYS XM is in excess of 25 years in a Data Centre environment – and in excess of 20 years in worst case conditions.

“Designed for durability, the lifetime of the MODULYS XM is comparable with – and compatible with – the lifetime of the application. What this means is that you can say goodbye to costly and stressful replacements, because there’s no need to replace your UPS anymore.”

The UPS that’s been engineered for endurance – beyond market standards

The combined impact of a growing dependency on data, makes it of paramount importance that power supply systems have the capability to perform reliably and to remain stable in the face of an explosion in demand for compute-intensive tasks. Although today’s electrical infrastructure and facilities are designed to minimise downtime with high levels of inherent redundancy, as important as the mission-critical applications themselves is the quality of the power supplied.

With unique and proven functionality beyond market standards, this UPS has been engineered with the very highest degree of reliability in mind. “When designing infrastructure, one of the most important parameters to consider is the short circuit current” explains Saro. “Not only to ensure the correct design of cables, protection and selectivity, but also to ensure the right choice of UPS. The UPS, in fact, has to be able to withstand the worst possible case of short circuit.  The static bypass of the UPS is designed for a permanent operation at the maximum rated power of the system – independent of the number of power modules installed. The maximum short circuit current that the bypass can withstand is then defined according to this optimum sizing.”

MODULYS XM’s 50 kW power modules have proven reliability of more than 1,000,000 hours MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) – as certified by a third party based on robust data – which is at least 4 times longer than the best market standards. In addition, both seismic resistance and double immunity to disturbances have also been certified by a third party against the highest industry standards, with MODULYS XM demonstrating the greatest reliability.

Power modules are truly hot-swappable by on-site personnel and the whole process is simple and risk-free, taking just 2 minutes.  This is possible thanks to self-aligning firmware, self-setting parameters and full self-testing – all of which are completely automatic, without the need for human intervention. Static bypass and all other parts are also hot swappable via front access while the UPS is working and without any interruption.

Saro comments; “MODULYS XM has an innovative module structure for the static bypass, whereby an extra bypass module is available as an option which is completely unique in the industry.  Simply by adding the plug-in extra bypass module, the short circuit current capabilities are increased and MODULYS XM can be placed – safely – anywhere within the installation. There really is nothing else like it – it’s ultra-reliable, completely flexible and it’s the UPS that lives on, and on, and on.”
